Attack on Buddhist Monastery and Vandalism of Statues and Homes by Muslim Bengali Community in Ukhiya

Hill Voice, August 1, 2026, Cox’s Bazar: Reports have emerged of a coordinated attack allegedly carried out by Muslim Bengalis on a Buddhist monastery in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, reportedly stemming from a long-standing land dispute. During the attack, at least three Buddha statues were vandalized, while at least four houses were attacked and damaged.

According to victims, the incident occurred yesterday, Friday (July 31), at around 4:30 PM at the Chenchhari Buddhist Monastery and nearby homes in the Chenchari area of Ward No. 7, Jaliapalong Union, Ukhiya Upazila.

Mong Chowdhury, a local leader and one of the victims, alleged that a group of approximately 200 people, led by a local resident named Nurul Haque, carried out the coordinated attack in the presence of Forest Department officials. He said the incident was linked to a long-standing land dispute that has continued since 2007.

According to Mong Chowdhury, the attackers entered the Chenchari Buddhist Monastery and vandalized at least three Buddha statues. At the same time, they allegedly attacked and vandalized the homes of four Tanchangya families living near the monastery.

“We are currently living in a state of insecurity,” said Mong Chowdhury. “There is a fear that another attack could occur at any moment.”

The Chakma-Tanchangya Student Council and the Cox’s Bazar District Buddha Purnima Celebration Council have strongly condemned the alleged attack on the Buddhist monastery and expressed their protest. They have demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible, calling for measures to preserve communal harmony in the area.
