An indigenous minor girl raped by a Bengali settler in Thanchi

Hill Voice, 24 May 2026, Bandarban: It has been alleged that a 5-year-old indigenous Tripura girl was raped by a Bengali settler youth in Thanchi Sadar Union of Thanchi Upazila under Bandarban district.

The rapist’s name is Bijoy Barua (16), son of late Mr. Mofi Barua and Mrs. Rekha Barua, permanent address: village-Camelia Para, Adunagar, Amirabad Union, P.S.-Lohagara, District-Chittagong, current address: Notun Para (Mallika Barua’s house), Thanchi Bazar area.

The incident is reported to have occurred at Mallika Barua’s house in Thanchi Bazar area around 12 noon yesterday (May 23).

The victim is said to be a student of the nursery class of Thanchi Model Government Primary School.

Today (May 24), the victim’s father, Endrojoy Tripura, went to Thanchi police station alone and filed a case against the accused rapist, Bijoy Barua, and it is learnt that at one point, the police arrested Bijoy Barua and took him to the police station.

According to the complaint filed by Androjoy Tripura, yesterday (May 23) at approximately 10:00 am, the victim child left the house and went to play with accused Bijoy Barua’s niece Sanu Barua (7) in the field next to the house. While playing, at approximately 12:00 pm, accused Bijoy Barua called the victim child to their house, took off the child’s pants and raped her. Later, at 9:00 pm, after dinner, the victim child told her mother that her genitals were hurting. When asked about the reason for the pain, the child told her mother that Bijoy Barua had raped her.

This afternoon, when the local people including the student and youths came to know about the matter, there was widespread anger among them. Then, the Jumma students and youth of the area gathered and went to the police station and wanted to see the face of the rapist. Seeing this gathering of the Jumma students and youth, a group of BGB members arrived there and tried to drive the students and youths away. This created a heated argument and tension between the students and youths and the BGB members for some time. At this time, the Jumma students and youths accused the BGB members of siding with the rapist.

At one point, the situation calmed down when a BGB commander assured that the rapist would be brought to justice.
