UNPO Conference on Re-imagining Self-Determination held in The Hague

Hill Voice, 29 August 2026, International Desk: A conference titled “Re-imagining Self-determination”—marking the 35th anniversary of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO)—was held in The Hague, Netherlands. The two-day conference took place on August 27–28.

Opening remarks from Rubina Greenwood, UNPO President; Diana Eggleston, Special Envoy City of Peace and Justice; Eduardo Welsh, sponsor; and Mercè Monje Cano, UNPO Secretary-General, setting the political and intellectual context for the two-day conference.

Priti Bindu Chakma and Injebee Chakma participated in the conference as representatives of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) on behalf of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The 21st General Assembly session of the UNPO will be held on August 29–30, following the two-day conference on the right to self-determination.

It is worth mentioning that on the morning of February 11, 1991, representatives of 15 nations and peoples gathered at the Peace Palace in The Hague with the aim of establishing the UNPO. Each delegation signed the charter in turn; they delivered speeches in their respective mother tongues and conveyed messages of goodwill to their communities, expressing solidarity and shared aspirations.

After thirty-five years, the UNPO has returned to The Hague. Founding members, former members, past staff, and long-time associates gathered on Thursday evening (August 27) to commemorate this journey. Amidst an atmosphere of reminiscence and commitment to the future, various ideas were shared, and opportunities arose to reflect on the organization’s history and strengthen connections among its members.
